Astro’s takes the importance of a good doughnut very seriously, both in the production and consumption of their sweet treats. Their made to order cake doughnuts have a longer journey before landing on your plate compared to other doughnuts and they recommend you enjoy them as soon as they come out of the fryer to achieve optimum doughnut deliciousness. The process starts the night before when the dough is made for fresh doughnuts the next day. The dough is then laid out and cut using custom made cutters. From there they are moved to the proving drawers to achieve that classic raised, hole-less shape. The deep fryer is next, followed by the work table where someone hand-dresses and decorates the doughnuts before sending them out to hungry mouths. Pulling the doughnut apart reveals a still steaming center; it’s soft, cake-like interior a sharp contrast to its crunchy exterior. Flavors include Vanilla Glaze, Cinnamon Sugar, Nutella and Maple Bacon.
Easy favorites for the cake doughnuts are the Vanilla Glaze and Cinnamon Sugar varieties. The Vanilla Glaze does not overpower the sweetness of the cake, and it is satisfactorily crunchy even after being dipped into a hot cup of fresh brewed La Colombe coffee. The Cinnamon Sugar doughnut is doused in a spicy, sugary mixture that also adds a great flavor to your coffee as the granules from the doughnut tumble into the liquid below. Nutella lovers will rejoice at the Nutella doughnut, the Nutella glaze slowly melting into the hot doughnut. The Maple Bacon doughnut, while absent of a very strong maple flavor, still nails the sweet and salty topping for all enthusiasts of the combination.
If you’re looking for something savory to go with your doughnut selection, Astro’s Fried Chicken Honey Breakfast Sandwich is a great place to start. Fried chicken is topped with a honey butter spread, and an egg can be added on top for an extra jolt to your breakfast. And don’t think you’ll be getting a boring croissant or bagel with these sandwiches. If you’re looking to combine doughnuts and chicken into one fantastic bite, they offer a savory doughnut that is crispy yet still soft on the inside. Astro’s has locations in Virginia and Washington D.C. and opened their first west coast shop in April 2017. Operating manager Art Levitt is excited to share this concept with new customers and is planning to expand to multiple locations in Los Angeles.
