Brunch Like a Boss During Newport Beach Restaurant Week

Weekend brunch is a welcome addition to the 14th Annual Newport Beach Restaurant Week. Here, a roundup of our favorite brunch menus.

As if fantastic restaurants and fabulous views aren’t reason enough to dine in Newport Beach, Newport Beach Restaurant Week (happening now) beckons with special prix-fixe menus at over 70 participating restaurants. New to the line-up: weekend brunch. Gather your friends—fluffy lemon ricotta pancakes, savory chicken and waffles, and loaded bloody marys await. Can the weekend start already?

Helmsman Ale House | $15

Helmsman Ale House had us at beer for breakfast. Since opening last fall, this new brewery and restaurant have wowed locals and visitors with a bold beer selection and a menu to match. Brunch for Newport Beach Restaurant Week is unapologetically indulgent— especially when paired with a Hazy IPA for $5. Choose from petite cinnamon rolls or biscuits and gravy for your first course, and proper two egg breakfast, chilaquiles, or chicken and waffles for your second course. At $15, you make up in calories what you save in pennies. Carpe diem!

Tavern House Kitchen + Bar | $25

Let’s talk brunch strategy at Tavern House. The brunch menu is so tasty we advise dining with at least two friends, that way you can each order a different dish to taste. If sharing isn’t your thing, go with French 75’s Onion Soup to start. This recipe is a nod to owner David Wilhelm’s popular Laguna Beach eatery French 75 (now closed). There’s a reason it’s on the menu—it’s that good.

Mama’s Comfort Food and Cocktails | $20

The name says it all: Mama’s Comfort Food serves comforting and nostalgic food down to dessert. Their $20 brunch prix-fixe menu ends with a scoop of your favorite Thrifty Ice Cream. Mama serves breakfast all day, making brunch even brunchier.

Great Maple | $20

There are many chicken and waffle variations featured at Newport Beach Restaurant Week. Great Maple’s fried chicken and doughnuts are over-the-top decadent and delicious. Made-to-order maple bacon doughnuts is its signature dish. Delicious!

Provenance | $25

Is it gluttonous to want everything on the brunch menu at Provenance? Chef Cathy Pavlos does not skimp on flavor or quality of ingredients. Might we suggest starting with warm lemon ricotta poppy seed donuts, followed by housemade whiskey and brown-sugar cured wild salmon lox? Although seasonal fruit salad with brie cheese and balsamic reduction followed by short rib hash sound amazing. But mini cinnamon rolls from scratch followed by the Newport Scramble is calling my name too! Oh, the choices!

Cappy’s Cafe | $20

Cappy’s has been a Newport local’s hang-out for the past three decades. They have a no-fuss menu with pancakes as big as your head. That’s what we like about it.  And we appreciate that the first course on their brunch menu is either a bloody mary or mimosa. Bring on the weekend.
