Adya: An Indian Summer in Orange County
o you want to simply eat your meal or experience it? At Adya, located in both Anaheim and Irvine, Chefs Shachi Mehra and Sandeep Basrur are serving up some of the best Indian food around. Their menu mixes the authentic and flavorful street foods of India with classic California twists. If you’re unsure where to start, try their tamarind glazed pork belly (usually a special & not on the menu all the time) with the grilled corn chaat. Fresh fennel, tomatoes and cilantro adorn the melt-in-your mouth pork belly, a perfect start before your main course. Chefs Shachi and Sandeep strive to use local, organic and fresh ingredients whenever possible, ensuring that their guests are not only met with 5-star presentation, but with 5-star quality.
While it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the selection of options offered, there are a few dishes that first-time visitors should not pass up. The tandoori fish with yogurt and green chili is flaky and rich with flavor, but not enough to overwhelm the dish. Try pairing it with Adya’s summer watermelon curry, light but packed full of flavor. If seafood isn’t for you, try the marinated goat leg if they have it available on special, a dish you won’t typically find offered in the OC dining scene. Chef Shachi and Chef Sandeep, know just how to cook the meat to tender perfection. A nice side dish to pair alongside the goat leg “raan” is the okra masala. Guaranteed to taste unlike any vegetable dish you’ve had before, Chef Shachi takes a veggie that is typically known to be “slimy”, and roasts it to crispy perfection. It’s sure to tantalize your tastebuds and leave you asking for more – try it and you’ll see!
Before filling up too much, make sure to leave room for dessert. A trip to Adya would not be complete without their spiced chocolate cake with grilled peaches, tiger figs and saffron shrikhand. Imagine all the warm, rich flavors of fall packed into one amazing, mouth-watering dessert. Of course, the chocolate cake tastes best when paired with a warming cup of chai tea. The two flavors compliment each other nicely. For more dessert offerings, check out their full menu here! Interested in learning how to cook some of the delicious dishes for yourself? Adya offers cooking classes which are held on their private boxcar patio (Anaheim location) at various times throughout the year. Each class focuses on something different than before and features recipes, chef secrets, food and drink pairings and more! Find a full list of classes offered here.
