Laguna Beach Taste of the Nation For a Good Cause

More than one in six children struggles with hunger in America, including an estimated 1,890,050 children in California. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 16.5 percent of U.S. households with children were food-insecure in 2016, versus 12.3 percent of households without children. One of the ways we combat child hunger and poverty in this country is through federal nutrition programs at schools. In 2016, 59 percent of food-insecure households with children reported participating in at least one of these lunch programs during the past month.

Since 2010, No Kid Hungry has served over 500 million meals to hungry kids. The No Kid Hungry Campaign focuses on funding breakfast, after school and summer meals. These programs do not typically receive as much funding or attention as lunch programs. A reported 16 percent of kids enrolled in summer school do not receive an adequate meal, but No Kid Hungry has funded over 40,000 summer meals since their launch. These assistance programs bring children in need healthy and nutritious meals to spur growth and development. No Kid Hungry also holds workshops to teach families how to shop and cook on a budget.

National partners of No Kid Hungry include BJ’s Restaurants Foundation, Citi and Sysco. Advocates of childhood hunger including OpenTable and Food Network also sponsor the event. Additional sponsors include local businesses Montage Laguna Beach, Aqua Panna/S. Pellegrino, The Duchess On Cambridge, Epstein Becker & Green, McMonigle Group, Orange Coast Magazine and Southern California Gas Company.
