reakfast. Lunch. Brunch. Any way you slice it, it’s going to be good! For as long as this California native can remember, Sunday brunch has been a real treat. Drinking champagne, eating oysters on the half shell, sliced prime rib, unlimited crab legs and chocolate dipped strawberries in the morning are a luxury that we can get on board with. Am I right?!
Brunch has evolved into one of the more popular meals that restaurants and venues cater to, and the options of where to dine continue to expand. But sometimes we want to stay home on the weekends, avoid the crowds, be able to dine and drink bubbly at leisure and lounge poolside in our backyard. California weather provides the sunshine most every day, so my Sunday Fundays often start with a home cooked brunch, Mimosas or Bloody Marys, and end with a nap.
Two of the things this Gadget Gourmet loves most in this world: Drinking champagne and playing with new kitchen toys. When Urban Trend approached us with their housewares line, my next Sunday brunch menu was brewing in my head within minutes.
Urban Trend has an expanding line of housewares created for the family. The colors are bright and the products are sturdy and easy to handle. Their design philosophy is to create products that bring together value, looks and function. The company is based in Costa Mesa, CA with products available at Sur La Table both online and in-store.
I selected the following items from Urban Trend to test out in my kitchen:
Tango™ Citrus Juicer: Mimosas, anyone? With its ergonomic handle and non-slip base, Urban Trend’s juicer makes tabletop juicing a breeze and has two different heads available for both large and small citrus fruits.
Hometown Bagel Knife™: I just happened to have home smoked salmon and cream cheese in the refrigerator. This knife effortlessly slices a bagel, bread, baguettes, biscuits, croissants, dinner rolls, English muffins and buns without crushing them.
Orbit™ Herb Chopper: Perfect for my small garden growing in the backyard. The rolling mincer is designed to mince through fresh herbs with ease and folds flat for easy storage.
Ringo™ Multi Peeler: Used for both fruits and vegetables. With both serrated and straight blades, the Ringo multi-peeler makes peeling fruits and vegetables a breeze.
Our Brunch Menu:
- Eggs Benedict My Way: Poached eggs over homemade cold-smoked salmon, fresh spinach and sliced Hothouse tomatoes with a sous vide Hollandaise sauce. (If you want to know more about sous vide cooking, see it here.)
- Toasted bagels with home churned sun dried tomato butter (If you missed last months featured gadget, the Churncraft Butter Churn, see it here.)
- Chilled jumbo shrimp with an Ecuadorian cocktail sauce made with freshly squeezed lime, cilantro and a chipotle kick.
- Seasonal fresh fruit sliced and drizzled with homemade lemon curd made with juiced Meyer lemons from the tree.
- Herb coated home fries.
- Extra large side of bacon.
- Free flowing Mimosas with freshly juiced blood oranges and topped with pomegranate seeds.
The ease of juicing the lemons, limes and oranges made getting to the brunch table quicker, as did the multi peeler that I used for some fruits and the potatoes. The rolling herb cutter minced my basil, cilantro, dill, and tarragon within seconds and was a simple clean up as it separated into two easy to wash pieces. The bagel cutter was my favorite gadget of them all; as it sliced smoothly, and produced even cuts every time.
I will always be a fan of trying new restaurants and revisiting personal favorites. However, for the days when I choose to cook, clean and create, I am quite happy to have found a new product line that makes the good life that much better.
