Not Your Typical Taco Tuesday

It Is Time to Branch out From the Same Old Carne Asada and Carnitas

Taco Tuesday Orange County

T

aco Tuesday is practically its own little holiday. Celebrated each and every week, Southern Californians rejoice over tasty tacos and refreshing margaritas. Whether you go to the same family-friendly place each week or something more fancy, your order most likely does not stray from the norm. For the most part, you can expect the typical variety of tacos at restaurants all over: chicken, carne asada and carnitas, discounted. As a huge fan of these standards, I am not trying to put these down in any way. While they are delicious, I do like to change up my food routine. It is fun to try something new every now and then and to get out of my comfort zone.

We’d also like to point out that we love having a set day of the week to enjoy tacos, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we need them to be a dollar or offer a crazy discount. Sometimes, we just like to eat tacos on Tuesdays, because tacos. That being said, most of our regular Taco Tuesday hangouts are inundated with college kids trying to capitalize on said discount, which is another reason we were looking for different Tuesday vibes; unusual menu items, upscale restaurants with ocean-front views, and addresses that weren’t already remembered by our Waze appTaco Tuesday Orange County

The restaurants listed below put a unique twist on the standard street taco. From vegan options to German and Mexican cuisines intertwined, you are bound to find something fit for your taste buds. Even if it sounds a little different, take a risk and give the taco a chance. Who knows? It could end up being your next favorite meal!

Get your family and friends together, and celebrate Taco Tuesday as you have never before. Make it a weekly event to expand your horizons by trying out each restaurant. Unusual ingredients aside, these tacos are fantastic.  Taco Tuesday Orange County

First of all, the chef (Thomas Curran) studied baking and pastry at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France AND learned classic technique at Scottsdale Culinary Institute, so you know his food must be top notch. With a passion for German and Mexican food, he found a way to mix the two in a mouth-watering way, consider this his ode to taquerias, brathauses and beer gardens. For your starter, you must order the Germexican Nachos which comes with chips, kartoffelpuffer, kielbasa, charro beans, Modelo queso, guacamole, tomato, green onion, cotija, TB table salsa AND chicharron. After that fantastic combination, your taco of choice should be the Fried Cauliflower. Pair with some German Jalapeno Poppers and you have yourself a fusion fit for any day of the week — Yum yum yum!

Located right on the Balboa marina, you are lucky enough to get tacos and a view! Plus, there is live music on Tuesdays, so you definitely do not want to miss out on that. On the menu at Sol Cocina, created by Chef Deb, you can find a whole list of tacos which take on a creative approach to traditional Baja-style cooking. Chef Deb’s salsas are made fresh every single day, and there are over 25 in the restaurant (she gets us)! Canarditas Duck Tacos stand out on the menu, considering they are made with deep-fried duck leg confit! At first glance of their taco selections, you might be thinking these are pretty familiar, BUT, did you know you can order them dockside? And with 8 street taco selections and 15 specialty tacos to choose from, we’re sure you could dine here and find something new to try. Picture it; sipping margaritas hashtagging #yachtlife and #tacotuesday while listening to live music and pouring over what seems to be an endless selection a fresh, authentic flavors … we can say this is not our typical version of Taco Tuesday … but we could definitely get used to it.

Tried and true El Toro Bravo — we get it, you’re surprised to see them on this list. You could even say they are the most authentic when it comes to local insight on where to go to get good tacos that make you feel like you’re in Mexico. HOWEVER, we wanted to put them on this list to encourage you to try some of their other menu items, like their beef tongue, pork rind and buche. For all the meat lovers out there, this is the place for you; El Toro Bravo understands the art of marinade. Insiders tip: while you’re there, don’t forget to grab a side of their beans, they are amazing!

“You are what you eat, so be TACOS, everybody loves tacos.” A hilarious quote from their Instagram, after all, it is true! Ola is Spanish for “wave” and Hawaiian for “life,” and this is the inspiration for the restaurant. With a Hawaiian flair to their food, it is hard to beat this place. If you have a passion for sushi, then you must order the Albacore Sushi taco. It is put together with sashimi grade albacore, seared rare, mango-ginger slaw and wasabi cream. I would never put wasabi on my tacos, but now, nothing sounds better. Time to give it a shot! Taco Tuesday Orange County

6. Dos Chinos

If you haven’t had a chance to check out 4th Street Market yet, we highly suggest you do. Their patio alone is reason enough to visit – boasting a plethora of board games, killer artwork and live music (usually). Taking a step inside this impressive food hall, you’ll come across Dos Chinos, where their menu brings Latin and Asian flavors together on one plate (or burrito, or on a bed of French fries). Founded in 2010 by Hop Pham and  Viet Tran, the two childhood friends came together to create some pretty incredible flavor profiles. For example, if you order their carne asada, don’t expect the usual; their recipe includes Vietnamese chimichurri Angus beef. One favorite menu item of theirs; the Stoner fries!! Don’t forget to add an egg. Order now, ask questions later. And don’t forget to take a photo — it’s one of those menu items where you won’t believe it till ya see it.Taco Tuesday Orange County

7. Taco Maria

3313 Hyland Ave. Costa Mesa, CA 92626

This restaurant brings together flavors from generations of family tradition. With seven different awards including a Michelin-starred chef, you know your dining experience at Taco Maria is going to be nothing short of amazing. This place is a bit more upscale, so take a night off from staying in for a special date night out. Featuring an a la carte menu on Tuesday evenings, including tacos as well as small plates, Taco Maria supports the local farmer’s markets by only purchasing humanely raised meats and fish, and everything is fresh and seasoned with vigor, so you don’t have to worry about what the consequences are for being adventurous. We guarantee that at least one thing from your experience will feel like uncharted waters. My personal favorite on their menu is Arrachera, which the chef creates through hanger steak, roasted chiles, applewood bacon and queso fundido. Anything with queso has my heart, but combined with steak and bacon is almost too much for my taste buds to handle — emphasis on the word almost. For more delicious tacos, you can view their sample menu here. Enjoy!

At this point, you must be craving tacos. For your sake, I hope it is a Tuesday so you can begin your drive to the closest restaurant listed above. With all the options, it will be practically impossible to find something out of the ordinary that you dislike. The typical tacos simply will not cut it anymore. You want something more exotic, something trendy. Not only for the photos, but for your tummy. Life is short and should not be spent eating the same type of food. Do the same with your drinks too! Instead of ordering your usual watermelon margarita, get a Mexican Moscow Mule. After all, it is most likely discounted, so you do not have any excuses. Make this the era of spontaneity, the tacos are begging you. Taco Tuesday Orange County
