A Taste of the Hamptons Inside Newport Beach

Babette’s Restaurant, one of East Hampton’s most popular neighborhood eateries, has opened a venue next to Starbucks in the Crystal Cove Shopping Center. The name is inspired by owner Barbara Layton’s nickname and also by the movie Babette’s Feast.  Barbara was weary of vegetarian restaurants that had no elegance or ambiance. Charming and chic, with a beautiful garden courtyard, Babette’s is up to the challenge, but it offers much more than just vegetarian dishes.  Managed by Barbara’s son, Zach Layton, the restaurant brings a trendy east coast vibe to Newport.

Barbara says Babette’s focus is on organic, local and seasonal ingredients because of its commitment to sustainability and the support of “farmers and growers who do the right thing”.

The menu features breakfast, lunch and dinner for vegans, carnivores and everyone in between. An organic juice bar and full liquor bar cover the full spectrum of beverage penchants – (Zagat’s mentions the “knock your head off fresh squeezed bloody Mary”).

Breakfast fare (served until 4 pm) features outrageous omelettes, from the Great White, with 5 organic egg whites, to a Tuscan Frittata with artichoke, burrata and basil. Pancakes, oatmeal and granola are just a few of the other choices for breakfast.

Healthful selections for lunch include salads such as artichoke fennel or avocado tangerine.   Additionally, handheld favorites are the grass-fed organic beef burger and the house made vegetable burger with chipotle aioli.  The herb roasted organic Chicken and Sake-Soy marinated rib eye of beef along with plenty of salad and vegan choices provide an elegant dinner experience. Seasonal smoothies and cleansing juices are offered for those who desire lighter fare. Babette’s signature dish is the barbequed tofu, which Barbara says is ordered more often by meat eaters than by vegetarians. The desserts are made on the premises and the wines are organic. A truly appreciated feature of Babette’s is the “takeaway window” which opens at 6 am and serves coffee, juice and pastries.

Newport Beach has been waiting for this restaurant for a long time! Welcome Babette’s!!
